New Chickens

We adopted some new chickens a few weeks ago. This is a Buff OrpingonWe got 5 hens and 1 bantam. They were living at a neighbor's house up the road. She was moving and couldn't take her little flock with her.
They are beautiful birds and it's obvious that they were well cared for. We're pretty sure they lived a coop before they came here. I don't think they know what to do with the freedom of a pasture. Mostly they just hang out in, or under the coop.

This gal is a Barred Rock.
Welcome chickens, thanks for the eggs!

  1. Two informative posts abut farm life. Both the wee calf and the new flock are so lucky to live on the Jennings Brae Bank Farm. "Almost Heaven" as they say.
    Love the photos, as always!

  2. How are they getting along with the other chickens? No hazing issues? They're beautiful, by the way.

  3. They were a little crazy when the new hens arrived. But now have seemed to figured out the pecking order. The runts of our original flock seem to be the meanest to the new chickens...but they are still the runts and haven't moved up in the ranks much.

  4. I wonder if the beautiful Barred Rock is related to the Barred Owl? They wouldn't seem to have much in common other than I am sure the owl would find the hen quite tasty. Speaking of which, 1) do you have to lock up the coop every evening and 2) have you ever heard the song "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" by Asleep at the Wheel? If not, you should.
